I never thought I'd write this, but I'll remember my trip to Koh Phangan for a long time, and it's not because of the parties, but because of this bike rental service. If you're thinking of renting a scooter to explore the island, be prepared to be ripped off at the first opportunity.
A scratch for 100, 000 baht – is that normal?
But the real circus started when I returned the bike. The bike had a couple of minor scratches (hello, Koh Phangan's dirt roads). The owner immediately started yelling that the entire plastic would have to be replaced. Even though the actual price of a new part in the store is 500 baht, they demanded 100, 000! And if it were just a deposit, no – they demanded an extra payment. When I tried to reason with them, they were rude and threatened me with jail.
Multiple guarantees and searches.
This is completely outrageous. I left my bag with the owner of the agency before the ferry (she was a travel agent, so she seemed trustworthy). After the ferry sailed, I discovered my money was missing. Of course, no one confessed. Locals say this kind of thing happens on Koh Phangan: they might even pick your bag while you're returning your bike.
The bottom line is: renting a bike from this service is a real scam. Either demand a perfect bike, photographing every scratch, or be prepared to pay for "repair" of a broken seat or for allegedly stolen parts.
My advice: if you do rent, only from large chain agencies at the pier or at your hotel, and never leave your passport or take anyone's word for it. Koh Phangan is certainly beautiful, but it leaves a bad taste in your mouth, as they say…
