The building is magnificent and the setting generally pleasant, although the presence of numerous free-range chickens somewhat spoils the experience: they come begging for food on the terrace and make a mess, to the point that you have to watch your step.
The welcome, however, was very mixed. We were greeted by a lady with a charming English accent, absolutely lovely and warm. Unfortunately, the rest of the staff were rather cold and unfriendly, which contrasts sharply with the image of a 4-star establishment.
The room was comfortable, with very good quality bedding. The air conditioning was also appreciated, although we were unpleasantly surprised to find it set to heating when it was 33 degrees Celsius outside. Fortunately, the problem was quickly rectified.
As for the exterior, the steps serving as a terrace are in dire need of cleaning: blackened steps, traces of dirt, and even tall grass growing between the stones… This lack of maintenance is hardly acceptable for a castle claiming to be high-end.
In general, the cleanliness of the common areas leaves much to be desired: dirty tiles, dead leaves piled up in the restaurant's flowerpots, visible dust on some decorative elements like the clock's globe in the dining room… all these details give an impression of neglect that is hardly in keeping with the establishment's stated level of service.
The cocktails are offered at high prices that we found unjustified.
As for the food, the presentation of the dishes is elegant, but unfortunately, the taste is disappointing: bland, under-seasoned dishes with very small portions. The white wine was served barely chilled; we asked for more ice, but were told they were out because the machine had to "make more"… surprising in the middle of a heatwave.
Finally, breakfast was a real disappointment: very poor coffee, blackened bananas, pastries clearly reheated in a pan from the day before, unpleasant-tasting apple juice, not to mention the bread served, clearly industrial, the kind you find in motorway service stations.
